Yesterday I was driving home from picking up my kids at school and I happened to notice some miniature horses in my neighbors yard. So being the animals lovers that we are, I pulled onto a side road and the kids and I were oohing and aahing over the three tiny little horses. A woman in a truck pulled up along side me (I’d never seen her before) and asked me what I thought about the miniature horses. Of course, I went on and on about how adorable they were. It turns out she is the woman that had given them to my neighbor. She told me the two females were most likely with foal. Here’s the GREAT news she told me the male is a Stallion.

I happen to have two miniature donkeys that are of breeding age. I’d really like to breed them to the little stallion up the road. The offspring would be “Hinny’s”. They would look like miniature mules but since their mother was a donkey they’d be called Hinnys.

This woman told me she had a 17 hand, 5 year old thoroughbred gelding. She said she’d give him to me for free. He needs training. We only have one horse (3 year old mare) but our neighbors have horses so she isn’t lonely. We also have a llama that our horse bosses around. So here’s what I need to figure out. Do I really want another horse? Do I want to feed another horse in the winter? We have 15+ acres of pasture for them to feed from spring through summer but have to supplement in the winter. This horse is so big I’m not even sure he’d fit in our stock trailer. The woman did say that he’ll load in a slant trailer, no problem, well we don’t own one of those trailers so it is a big problem. I got the woman’s number and have some time to think it over. Decisions, decisions…

UPDATE: I’ve decided to decline the free horse. It’s not responsible to take on another horse when I have this much debt. Feeding another horse isn’t cheap and won’t help be get debt free any faster.

I still plan on talking to the stallions owner and asking if I can borrow him for breeding my donkeys.
