jd - That's a great idea. I know ditching the car payments would help me become debt free faster but I want to have my cake and eat it too.

I'm sure we are upside down on the big car payment. Suburban's aren't worth what they used to be. Even if I wasn't upside down on the Suburban, I really can't get rid of it, we have a large family and it's the only vehicle that seats everyone. I'm making an excuse, I know because I could drive a beater van but living where we do, I HAVE to have 4 wheel drive.

My smaller car payment has a balance of about $10,000 or so for a 2005, vehicle. I'm hoping that I'll be able to pay it off with my 2008, tax refund.

I'm full of excuses.

How about dumping one or both cars and get some beaters so you can knock out the cc debt in less then 3 years

Hey Chris - I wish you luck on your debt free journey too! It's amazing how fast the debt can add up isn't it? Can you imagine what it'll be like when we can keep the money that's currently going out to the CC's & auto payments every month? Life will be even sweeter!

Good luck with your plan to become debt free. Two years ago I had about 40,000 in credit card debt. I continued to make some bad decisions and in April of this year I had hit $75,000 in CC debt. I am now shelling out more than $1500 a month to credit card companies on top of a $500 car payment. In the last 2 and a half months, I have paid down almost $3000 in credit card debt. I just pray that I can keep up at this pace.
