in Getting Out of Credit Card Debt Videos, debt

Dave Ramsey’s caller is deep in debt and recently lost her job. She’s currently $6,000 behind in payments. Her husband didn’t know about her debt until just recently.

I think she needs to accept her husband’s help. I’m always puzzled why married couples that keep their finances separate.

Separate finances works for so many people….not for me though! I figure if we’re in the marriage together then we’re in everything together!

My husband and I have separate finances because he has child support to pay for his two children from his previous marriage. Until he no longer has a financial obligation to pay child support our finances will remain separate. He stays current on his child support but even an error on the state’s side could cause them to come after his accounts. We can’t risk all our money being frozen to where we can’t support our home and income. Sometimes you do it to protect your own family.

Jenn – I never thought about a situation like this. My husband also pays child support but since I’m a SAHM something like this never occurred to me. Thanks for enlightening me!

:) I don’t think it occurs to most people unless they are in or have been in that situation. It does make things a little more interesting and at times difficult. I definitely see us combining accounts once the child support is over. It’s a lot to manage with separate accounts and splitting the bills & budget. We both keep each other in the loop on our accounts and we have our budgets side by side in the spreadsheet we use. I think it’s important to talk about the current state of things be it with separate finances or joined.
