I’m dreading Christmas

in Get Out of Credit Card Debt, Goals, life

I’m dreading Christmas, I guess I’m a bit of a Scrooge?  I don’t like how commercial the holiday has become, I swear Christmas isn’t anything like it was when I was a kid.  Don’t get me wrong, I like buying presents for my kids and kids in general but I really dislike the stress of picking out gifts for adults.  To tell the truth, being as far into debt as we are, I really think we shouldn’t give any gifts to anyone outside our immediate family.

Every Christmas season I start out feeling like Scrooge.  I talk tough and then end up caving into all the Christmas pressure.  I end up adding to our credit card balances and struggle the whole next year just to pay off gifts that are long forgotten or stuffed in the back of closets.

This Christmas is going to be different though!  I vow not to go into debt, my credit cards will not leave my wallet.  I will pay cash of everything and if we can’t afford something then we won’t buy it.  I don’t care if people think I’m cheap!

Don’t do it – be strong – adding to the ccs is no good!

I am with you though – it is hard to do Christmas – we actually backed out of a lot of our gift giving norms with family… it is crazy for me to go buy something for my sil when they make 4 xs the amount that dh makes & she can buy it for herself! lol

Good Luck & Stay Strong!

I also have a dread of Christmas due to the spending. I’m really cutting back this year.
Be strong

We’re doing a gift exchange that has greatly reduced the amount of useless crap to buy for everyone. Instead we just buy crap for one other person. I also dread Christmas because of credit card debt going up each year. This year though it’s planned and I think my wife will work with me on it this year. I don’t want to spend a lot this year, it’s not worth the frustration next year.

I’m with you. I started really getting out of debt last year and that’s when I told my friends and family NOT to buy me a present. I was honest and said that I couldn’t afford to do Christmas and so they should save their money and go buy themselves something special after Christmas when the sales are crazy. A few people refused that idea and so I asked for a Target gift card and adopted a refugee family and bought presents for them. Conventional wisdom would tell me to save that gift card for myself, but seeing how truly poor they were made me think about all the stuff I have already. Sort of clarifies the difference between need and want – ya know?

Anyways, great blog. We can keep each other going. I just started a blog myself.
