The check is in the mail

in Get Out of Credit Card Debt, debt, expenses, life, savings

My husband is making fabulous money right now, our current problem is he hasn’t been paid in approximately one month. We’re running out of cash. Supposedly “the check is in the mail”. I’ve pulled the old “checks in the mail” line myself in the past but now that we’re on the waiting end I’m really feeling the pinch.

Originally I thought the money we had in our checking account would last us 2 months but we’ve had some truck problems – two flats that needed to be replaced and some mechanical problems that had to be repaired and like a total idiot, I didn’t factor in the fact that my husband would be having to eat every meal (3 meals a day) out while he’s on the job. This can get extremely expensive. He is reimbursed for meals and lodging but we have to pay these expenses upfront. So far we have financed 3+ weeks of meals and lodging. I can’t believe I was dumb enough to believe we’d be paid by now, if I had known it was going to take this long for payment, I would have had my husband charge all these work related expenses on the credit card that doesn’t have a balance. At least then I’d have money to buy groceries and pay bills.

The company we billed has been paid and now we’re just waiting for that company to cut my husband a check. I’m not sure how long it’ll take to get our check. I’m thinking if I don’t get the money by Wednesday or at the latest Friday we’ll be tapped dry. As you can imagine if we don’t have any money to pay bills all our locked in interest rates on our credit cards are going to go through the roof. I don’t want to think about missing our other payments. :-(

Ironically, when the the two invoices I billed do get paid we’ll be doing better financially than we’ve been in years. I have so many mixed emotions. I’m scared I won’t be able to pay our bills if the check doesn’t show up soon but all I can do is hope things work out for the best and the check gets here ASAP.

Try to have some buffer, set up some kinda of savings where you are not relying on the next paycheck to pay all of your bills. I understand that paying down debt is a priority, but it is not good to deplete your checkings/savings to get that debt down to zero ASAP! They say that all it takes is $500.00 of unexpected expenses to turn people into debt. Stop relying on money before it hits your account.

I thought I had a buffer. We had over a months worth of money in our checking account. I’m afraid we spent a little more than I would like to admit, thinking we’d get paid within 2 weeks or so of invoicing. That didn’t happen. Oh and our COBRA health insurance being $1,200/month helped to zap down our money. The cobra is like another house payment.

We had ZERO deposits in November and now we’re into the 2nd week of December. We’re screwed!

Sorry to hear about it, but have been there, done that. A few months ago my husband was paid $4000 for a job that we’d paid gasoline for out of our pockets, plus materials (IIRC, the net ended up being around $2000) and the client paid us with a credit card check, which ended up bouncing!!! Then our bank put it through again, but wouldn’t release the money for 14 days! I’m a signer on the checking account at my job, so my employer’s account is connected to mine through my SSN. The bank didn’t bother to put a hold on the $4000 check in my account, since they thought my employer’s account was mine also (the bank teller saw more than enough money to cover the $4000 not realizing it wasn’t MINE!) Anyway… I hope the check gets to you sooner than later! I am not happy about the debt we’ve incurred in the past year, but I am thankful we have our credit cards to keep us going through times such as these. Found your blog through My Debt Blog.

I feel for you, it’s tight everywhere. We had to use our “buffer” this month as well.
