We’ve been paid!

in life

I’m breathing a HUGE sigh of relief!  Let me tell you not getting paid for over a month is a challenge.

My husband’s check didn’t show up until 1:30 pm, so I was sweating it out a little, imagining all sorts of things going wrong.  I immediately ran into town to deposit it at my bank.  We live in a tiny town so I know all the women at the bank.  My checker, who was very impressed with the check amount, asked me if I knew the people that wrote the check and I told her I did.  She said asked me if the check was good and I assured her it was good so THANKFULLY she didn’t put a hold on the check and I have access to the funds.  Sometimes living in a small town isn’t all its cracked up to be and other times it rocks!  My refrigerator is stalked again and my husband is on his way home after being gone for WAY TOO long.  It’s a great day and it’s looking like it’ll be an even better weekend.

Have a nice weekend!

Please, please say that your husband has rethought buying a new truck soon. I can understand how badly he wants one, but your family needs to have more reserves to carry you through times like this. It is a fact of life, at least for me, that checks from clients don’t always arrive when they’re supposed to. Next time, the client may be unwilling to overnight a check or unable to pay so quickly. Or the client may not be due to pay you, yet you’re at a point when your bills are due. It’s just how things happen sometimes. I know my nerves wouldn’t stand it if I didn’t have reserves.

My advice would be for you both to agree to save until you have a certain amount in cash reserves and then after that point, the extra money will be saved for a new truck. And of course, pay cash for the truck when the time comes. You’ll have to arrive at the cash reserve number together, but I know that I would be aiming for a minimum of six months of living expenses, if not more. I think when you’re self-employed, it’s not an “emergency fund.” It’s an “essential to functioning while self-employed” fund.

What a relief that must be! I don’t think I’d be able to survive so long without any income!

jpkittie – The money is still stilling in my checking account.

J. Money – Thanks! I can’t tell you how good it feels to have some money again.

Maria – I wish I could say my husband has changed his mind about buying a new truck but I’m afraid he’s got “new truck fever”. Scary…

The Frugalist – Normally we wouldn’t have been able to survive two weeks, let alone over a month without a paycheck. I think this blog has everything to do with us having money in the bank. This blog has kept me accountable.

Money Funk – Thanks for your comment!

Ian – The check arriving MADE out Christmas.

Nikki – Thanks for the comment!

Jim – Yeah, we cut it too close for comfort. I didn’t mention this before be I actually had to borrow $1,000 from my 11 year old daughter to get us through this close call. I figured I’d be better off paying her some interest instead of paying the bank for a few bounced check fees. I’m embarrassed to admit I had to borrow money but it is what it is. I told my daughter about me borrowing the money after I had paid her back with an additional $50 and she understood.

JW Thornhill – I got lucky this time, we really cut it close! I don’t know what I would have done if we didn’t get the check when we got it.
